St
Fillans Golf Club is situated in the heart of Highland Perthshire,
in one of the most beautiful parts of Scotland with magnificent lochs
and towering mountains. The village of St Fillans sits at the eastern
end of Loch Earn, its rows of houses, hotels and guesthouses enjoying
the fabulous view up the loch. Tucked away across the River Earn is
the nine-hole St Fillans course.
Considering
the imposing hills that surround the course, the terrain is surprisingly
level, and is popular with those new to the sport yet proves to be
a difficult course to score well on for the more experienced player.
At this nine hole course each hole is very challenging and a combination
of course design, superb green keeping and breathtaking scenery keep
players on the course as long as possible.
The course was
originally design by the famous St Andrews professional Willie
Auchterlonie and was opened in 1903. The original design has been
added to over the years 8 giving a total yardage (for 18 holes)
of 6054 yards (S.S.S. 69). The course lies on the flat terrain on
the south side of the River Earn on the Drummond estate of the Earl
of Ancaster. Much of the expense of the course was borne by Lord
Willoughby de Erseby but unfortunately due to illness he was unable
to play the first shot on his beloved course.

Centrally located
and around an hours drive from Glasgow, Edinburgh, Oban or Perth. From
the west take the A85 and 13 miles west of Crieff arrive at the east
end of the village where a left turn will take you to the club. From
the east take the A84 from Stirling or A85 from Oban to Lochearnhead,
from where a ten minute drive west alongside Loch Earn will bring you
to the village of St. Fillans.
5th - A dogleg
left, where accuracy is more important than length. A drive over
the edge of the rocks will leave you with a short iron to the
green, but the more cautious will play a long iron off the tee.
Be sure to leave your approach below the hole, as an overhit approach
can result in a lost ball, and a downhill put from the back of
this green will need to be perfect or three puts will surely be
the result.

3rd - At the
third you have to drive over a lateral water hazard from an elevated
tee ( after a pause to admire the view and take a photograph).
Too far left and you are in amongst the gorse; too far right and
you can be in the thick rough. Bunkers also lie in wait up toward
the green. After a good drive an accurate wedge should give you
the chance of a birdie. If a stiff westerly is blowing, the carry
from the tee can look intimidating. A beautiful hole, but always
a challenge.

1st - The
hole doglegs left, but it is best played straight down the middle
to avoid the wood on the left. If you carry the roadway an 8 iron
should suffice to the green, but if the drive is played out right
for safety, the second shot could be a tricky long iron to an
elevated green. Vijay Singh drove the green when he played here.
Anyone think they can match that?
