scenic views that live in the memory for many years. It has a total
yardage of 6047 yards with a Par/SSS of 70/69. The castle lies in a
heavily forested residential estate surrounded by every tree native
to Western Europe including five different types of oak and soaring
pacific Coast Redwoods.
The
course runs alongside the peaceful Endrick Water and offers spectacular
views out towards the mountains of Arthur, Vane, Vorlich, Lui and Ben
Lomond. The course is less than a mile from the start of Loch Lomond
. It is only a few miles off the direct route from the city to the famous
attractions of the Trossachs and is perfectly served by the lovely village
of Drymen, less than two miles away. It is only 30 minutes from Glasgow
It is a beautiful course that enjoys magnificent surroundings and one
which will live in the memory for some time.
History
The
club was established in 1936 and is owned by the Duke of Montrose. It
was designed by James Braid, 5 times Open champion, and is a particular
delight for the touring golfer. The clubhouse was build on the site
of the ancient Buchanan House, home of the Buchanan family that has
held land on the sides of Loch Lomond since the 13th century. The last
house on the site burnt down in 1852 but the current clubhouse incorporates
some of the surviving walls. The course was once used by the Buchanans
to train racehorses, and one of their horses, Sefton, won the 1878 Derby.
This feat is remembered in the name of the 18th hole and in a huge painting
of the horse and jockey in the clubhouse.

Thirty minutes north
of Glasgow. Buchanan
Castle Golf Club is just south of Drymen on the A809.
Driving from Glasgow take the A81 in a North Westerly direction out
of the city, look out for the A809 turn at Milngavie. There are a set
of large white gates on the turning before Drymen itself, Buchanan Castle
Golf Club is clearly marked.
1st
The first hole has framing trees just where the fairways turns
to the right. The hole is 395 yards. If you drive to the left to open
up the second shot, you will find a diagonal of three bunkers squeezing
out the left side of the green on the line of your approach, and you
are likely to need a healthy iron shot.
Par 3 8th. The
signature hole. A 149 yard strike over water to a smallish green.
Trees protect on the right with several bunkers capturing the loose
shot.

Par
4 5th, a short 257 yard with a burn running across some 25 yards short
of the green. Into the wind a lay up is required by all but the longest
hitters, but on a still day a drive to a bunker protected green is
inviting.
Par
3 16th. A 183 yard tee shot, through two guarding trees some 100 yards
out, to an upturned green protected by approach bunkers on either
side. A rifle strike is required which needs to carry the green, many
a time the hole plays longer than expected, resulting in a precise
chip to save par.
